Epidavros is a municipality in the prefecture of Argolis in Peloponnese, Greece. The filmmaker and his company are on the national road Isthmus-Ancient Epidaurus, on the way to the ancient theater.
The camera shows us from a distance the theater which was built in the middle of the 4th century BC and is located on the west side of Cynortion Mountain next to the temple of Asclepius, the god of medicine.
We see the whole theater, it has a capacity of 14,000 spectators and retains the characteristic structure of a Hellenistic period (323-333 BC) style theatre that has an cavea (the seating area, built into a hill to create a natural viewing space), orchestra (a circular piece of ground at the bottom of the theatron where the chorus and actors performed) and skene (an area where actors could change their costumes).
Then, we are moved to the cavea, to its central staircase and watch shots of the orchestra and the stage building where the visitors wander around observing the monumental theater.
We watch the circular orchestra, the floor of which consists of compacted soil with gravel mixed with clay. It is bordered by a stone frame and in the centre is a circular stone plate as the base of the altar. The stage building, the remains of which the filmmaker shows us, was a two-storey building and had a proscenium.
Afterwards, we see shots from the theatron of the ancient theater where a man goes up running in the middle staircase. A young woman stands at the orchestra and smiles looking at the lens. Then, a group of visitors invites a photographer with the old wooden camera, to take a souvenir photo as they sit in the theater’s seats.
Shots from the visitors follow and the group of friends heads to the parking lot and prepares to leave.
