Description
We are in Kaloi Limenes, a coastal settlement in the Regional Unit of Heraklion, Crete. On March 2, the tanker "Messiniaki Frontis" loaded with 98,000 tons of Libyan oil, bound for Constanta, approached the bay of Kaloi Limenes for refuelling. The grounding of the ship is attributed to an operator’s error, as a result of which approximately 12,000 tons were spilled into the sea.
The film opens with the -then- Olympic Airlines logo which is on a helicopter preparing to take off. We see the helicopter and its pilot. The filmmaker is standing in the helicopter, that is clearly in a different location and with a panoramic shot shows us the area and the tanker which is visible in the background.
The filmmaker shows us the area, the island of Agios Pavlos which is vaguely visible, the tanker from afar and afterwards, focuses on the name of the ship "Messiniaki Frontis" as well as its damage. With panoramic shots we see the whole ship as well as the rescue boats that are nearby. A tugboat is approaching, while we see the "VERNIKOS DIMITRIOS PIRAEUS" written on it, as well as a small boat. The shots of the tanker continue with the camera focusing on its blows while the small boat with the tugboat has come close enough. The filmmaker takes a close-up shot at their crew from the helicopter he is in and they greet him. The shots continue with the tugboat.
The view changes with general shots from Kaloi Limenes and the surrounding area. The lens stands on the island of Agios Pavlos which at the entrance of the port is the house of a major oil storage and terminal in which there are facilities for the supply of seagoing ships. The facility has four shore-based storage tanks containing fuel oil and gas oil, pumps. The helicopter stops and the crew descends.
The film closes with the helicopter having landed at Heraklion airport while behind it we can see a truck of the American oil company MOBIL and the building of Heraklion airport.
