Description
We are in Nikea, a large municipality close to Piraeus. In particular, we are at “Kyprou” street, very close to “Osia Xeni” square.

The film begins with a panoramic shot of the square, where wreaths are laid, for the anniversary of “25th March 1821”, the great national celebration of Greece’s independence from the Ottoman Empire.

More shots follow from the gathering area on “Kyprou” street, featuring the parade participants arriving and preparing. They also focus on the crowd that waits patiently to attend the event.

The parade begins! The camera, in the foreground, focuses on the flag bearer of the “Nikea High School for male students”– as it was called at the time. The recording continues with shots from participants dressed in traditional attire, students, and a crowd of men from different clubs with their flag bearers marching.

Creator's description

I remember how cheerful “Kyprou” street seemed these days, where parades were held and the “Osia Xeni” square where wreathes were laid. Our High School was located on that street, too.

It’s been many years since I last watched this film! Today (Christmas Day, 2022), I noticed, among others, myself featuring in the footage. I had… “appeared” twice. The first time, I am among the crowd of the flag-bearers who are holding the flags in parade rest position. The second one, I participate in the parade as the flag-bearer of the “Nikea High School for male students”.

All these took place 54 years ago, a bit more... than half a century ago!
