Description
The 1973 Greek referendum was proclaimed on June 12, 1973 by the military dictatorship, known as "Junta of the Colonels", and was held on Sunday, July 29 of the same year. Its main purpose was the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a Presidential Parliamentary Republic, which was accompanied by the granting of extra powers to dictator George Papadopoulos, to keep him in the office of President of the Republic for 8 more years.
The referendum is considered to had been set up and the results were 78.43% "Yes" and 21.57% "No".
The film's footage features the electoral offices in central Athens (starting with the French Institute in Kolonaki) with voter queues.
Next, we see images from the following day showing the headlines of the newspapers with the result of the referendum.
The film closes with footage taken from television with the oath of the dictator Georgios Papadopoulos.
